After only a year running her business, a mother of three’s determination and passion has lead her to be named Fraser Coast’s best cosmetic skin specialist of 2024.

Claiming the title with a whooping 34 per cent of the votes, Alexandra McDermott from Alexandra’s Skin & Laser Clinic has been named Fraser Coast’s best cosmetic skin specialist of 2024.

A young mum of three, Alexandra promised herself when she fell pregnant with her first son, Ryan, who is now 14 years old, that she would pursue her studies once he started prep.

“So in 2015 when Ryan was in prep, Braxton (11 year old son) was a toddler in kindy and I was pregnant with Charlie (9 year old daughter) I studied my diploma of beauty therapy in Hervey Bay,” she said.

“I have always had a passion for makeup and beauty since I was little.”

Alexandra has come a long way in 10 years, with three beautiful children, a loving wife and a thriving business, it seems she has hit the jackpot.

Alexandra recalled her pivot point, where in her first few weeks of studying she met an incredible woman named Susan from Dermalogica.

“She was just magical, her passion and the way she spoke about skin just made me fall in love with skin anatomy and skin health,” she said.

“I’ve spent hundreds of hours studying since to learn as much as I can.”

“If I wasn’t a skin therapist it would have been a mechanic, I think.”

Becoming a Skin Expert with Dermalogica in 2016, it was three years later through working and managing Laser Clinics Australia in Hervey Bay, that Alexandra found her love for laser.

Following her new-found passion into her studies, Alexandra obtained her laser license at the French Beauty Academy on the Gold Coast.

“Laser is something that if I’m not doing it when I’m 65 I will be so upset,” she said.

Opening her sole business “Alexandra’s Skin & Laser Clinic” in March 2023 and loving it ever since, Alexandra has found the salon to be her happy place.

“This isn’t a job to me.”

“Sometimes I actually think to myself ‘how am I at work right now.”

Only a year after opening her business, Alexandra’s Skin & Laser Clinic, Alexandra McDermott has been named the region's best cosmetic skin specialist.

Alexandra expressed that her favourite thing about being a skin and laser therapist is seeing the change in women’s confidence when they start to feel more comfortable in their own skin.

“Watching them change from someone who hunches their shoulders to walking in with their shoulders back and confident just fills my heart with so much joy.”

Passionate about all things laser, facials and skin treatments, from hair removal, pigmentation removal and Spider vein reduction, to creating homecare routines, for Alexandra it’s seeing the results and helping women relax that drives her.

“I am so passionate and dedicated to what I do,” she said.

“What I always think is how would I want my mum treated? Would I want someone to sell her things for the sake of a sale or would I want them to truly believe they had the abilities to change this woman’s life and fill her with so much confidence?”

“I think I was nominated (for the region’s best cosmetic skin specialist) because of who I am, I am so determined to help as many women as I possibly can while I am able to do what I do.”

While she is the only therapist with her business currently, Alexandra has big plans to grow and add to her team one day, as well introducing more treatments and expanding the salon.

“I am so excited to be doing what I am right now,” she said.

“The future is bright, and I can’t wait to see where I am 2 to 5 and 10 years from now.”

With 17 per cent of the votes, (almost half of the votes for Alexandra), Cassie Adams from Serenity Skin Spa has come runner up.

“We are so lucky in this industry to have incredible woman all around,” Alexandra said.

Among the 28 nominees, Alexandra expressed her utmost admiration for one in particular.

“I think Tammy at Skin & Wax is a powerhouse and I would love to spend time with her one day.”
