80-year-old Maryborough sewage plant getting multimillion dollar upgrade

The multimillion dollar works will improve the “quality of effluent” at the Aubinville Sewage Treatment Plant and reduce odour as the ageing equipment is replaced.

A Sewage Treatment Plant in Maryborough, which is almost a century old, is getting a $5.1 million revamp.

A sewage treatment plant on the Fraser Coast, which is almost a century old, is getting a $5.1 million revamp.

The Aubinville Sewage Treatment Plant at Maryborough is being modernised in a bid to improve the reliability of the plant.

The modernisation includes refurbishing the secondary settlement tanks which have been in operation since the 1970s, better lighting and CCTV equipment.

The works at the Plant are currently underway and are expected to finish by the end of 2022.

Councillor Daniel Sanderson said the revamp also includes installing a new chemical dosing system, “a new sludge loading conveyor and roadway improvements.”

“A separate part of the project will see a backup generator installed to ensure that the plant can continue operating if mains power is disrupted such as during floods, which have caused blackouts in the past,” Cr Sanderson said.

“Currently, a new raw sewage pump station and inlet works are being constructed.

“The improvements will allow the plant to be monitored and operated remotely if needed.”

The 21-22 budget also saw a further $8.1 million investment by the council for works at the facility.

“Ultimately the work improves the quality of effluent and reduces odour as the ageing equipment is replaced,” Cr Sanderson said.

“It is anticipated that the current projects will be finished by the end of next year.”
