Which Hervey Bay beaches will get sand push

Some beaches and beach access points will be closed temporarily during the works, which are designed to protect the dunes from further erosion after northerly winds and king tides earlier this year: See the list of beaches.

The annual sand push, which takes place across Hervey Bay beaches every winter to “profile” and build up dunes, has started.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council has indicated multiple beaches will undergo works, in a bid to protect the beaches from wave damage.

Councillor Dennis Chapman said the waves were “whipped by the northerly winds in November and King Tides in January and February.”

“The project is not designed to rebuild beaches worn down by erosion,” he said.

“The sand is pushed up against the dunes to act as a buffer, it absorbs the force of the waves and protects the dunes from further erosion.”

Through this process, sand is sourced from towards the low-tide mark, then pushed up the beach and stockpiled on the dunes.

The works started on Monday and will temporarily pause during school holidays from about June 27 until July 10.

Sand pushes will happen on beaches between:

  • Beach Road Pump Station to Seafront Oval
  • Pialba Skate Park to All Abilities Playground
  • Tooan Tooan Creek to opposite Hervey Street
  • Scarness Boat Ramp to the Torquay Boat Ramp
  • Alexander Street rock wall to the Churchill Street Groyne
  • Urangan Pier to the aquarium

Some beaches and beach access points will be closed temporarily during the works.

The sand pushes are expected to be completed by late July – depending on weather, tides, winds, and the amount of sand available to push.
