The aftermath of Myall Creek spilling into the streets of Dalby

Dalby homes have been drenched by floodwaters, with residents seeking refuge in evacuation centres and much of the damage still to be seen.

Myall Creek floods: "Look out Dalby"

Four homes have been inundated by floodwaters across Dalby and many residents sought refuge at evacuation centres, as Myall Creek reached major flood levels in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Dalby residents prepared for the worst last night after receiving an emergency alert for major flood levels.

Rainfall overnight in Dalby was just 0.2mm but heavy inflows sent floodwaters spilling into the streets of Dalby impacting four homes and some businesses.

The creek was currently steady and sitting at 3.2m, and the Bureau of Meteorology predicted it may fall below the minor flood level (2m) overnight Tuesday.

Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh said he was looking ahead with a plan to ensure there was less impact in future floods.

“After the last flood we raised with the State Government the opportunity in raising some of these houses that are impacted in low-lying areas, it’s certainly something after this flood that we’ll be following through with,” he said.

Two evacuation centres were prepared last night to accommodate those that needed to evacuate, however only one of the locations had to be used.

The Mayor commended emergency crews, staff and community members for the way they handled the emergency event, specifically in avoiding having the town cut off.

“It was really important to keep the Warrego Highway open, big accolades to our crew who managed to keep one lane on the Charles Drew Bridge open. The bridge is open and it’s good to see our produce on the move,” Mr McVeigh.

Although water levels have steadied, the town is inundated with water and a large amount of road closures remain.

“As the water recedes we’ll be out and about and can see the impact, we’ll have better details about how many homes have been impacted,” Mr McVeigh said.

He further commended the town for its management of the floods noting that the community has had a great amount of practice.

“Our community is very well organised, very big accolades from ourselves to our community for their responsiveness and for remembering that if it’s flooded forget it,” he added.

There were widespread rainfall totals of 10-60mm in 24 hours in the upper Condamine River catchment around Warwick.
