New information has been shared regarding the next ‘big thing’ coming to the Western Downs, with council revealing what residents can expect to see from Bell’s ‘Big Blade’ attraction.

Western Downs Regional Council announced in its most recent budget that the region would be receiving a new installation which is expected to generate tourism and enhance visitor experience, while simultaneously sharing the stories behind the community’s clean energy sector.

Council is partnering with Coopers Gap Wind Farm and its owner Tilt Renewables to install the wind turbine blade in Bell, which is expected to be completed at the start of 2024.

Tourism, Events and Regional Promotion spokeswoman Kylie Bourne said residents were proud to be the energy capital of Queensland.

“The wind turbine blade attraction is more than 67m long, weighs 22,339kg, and is believed to be one of only three such installations in Australia,” she said.

“It will be installed horizontally on purpose-made steel footings which will position the blade above the ground.”

The blade which will be installed between the Railway Shed and Mcphee St has been donated by Coopers Gap Wind Farm.

Ms Bourne said council sought feedback from residents in Bell as well as key stakeholders to confirm the new tourist attraction.

“Our region is building its reputation as a destination of choice and this project will only increase the unique experiences we have on offer here on the Western Downs,” she said.

Tilt Renewables executive general manager of operations Damien Sanford said the blade could act as a promise of a clean energy future.

“As we embark on a new era of energy generation, wind turbine blades turned public monuments signify a feat of engineering,” he said.

“Along with our Snowtown Wind Farm blade display in South Australia, we are proud to be able to provide a wind turbine blade to the picturesque township of Bell and its community.

“Tilt Renewables would like to extend a warm thank you to the people of Bell for their hospitality and support on the project.”
