Dalby Leagues Club celebrates rugby league history with new legends lager

A new lager is on tap at the Dalby Leagues Club, with proceeds from beer sales set to be donated to the rugby league teams while paying tribute to the footy legends who came before them. Full story.

The Dalby Leagues Club has launched a new lager that will not only pay homage to the footy players and organisers who started the club from day one but will donate money to the clubs with each purchase.

General manager Cara Hawkey came up with the concept of the beer and said the idea started after a conversation with a supplier about different tap beer options for the leagues club.

“When they suggested that we could potentially have our own branding, I had a thought about something based around the football heritage and after talking to a few of the regulars that were part of the old clubs, I felt it was the right way to go,” she said.

She said it was important to recognise the original football clubs, the Waratahs, Colts and Brothers who came before the Dalby Diehards.

“The original clubs are the reason we are here today and it’s important to remind people of that,” she said.

After brainstorming the concept with a few locals, Ms Hawkey said she went to artist Graeme McCullough who also played for one of the original teams back in the day and helped design the official League Legends Lager logo.

Former Brothers rugby league player Gerard Sankey said he loved the idea when it was brought to him.

“I thought it was a great idea,” he said.

“I was part of the original 100 that donated $100 each to put on a $10,000 deposit for the leagues club originally when it was formed in 1987 so it’s great to see.”

This year marked 30 years of the Dalby Diehards with former players from the original clubs reuniting at the leaguesy to take a trip down memory lane.

Mr Sankey who only gave the new beer a taste test recently due to his XXXX habit said he enjoyed the legends lager.

“It’s a great idea, it’s a great concept because the money is donating back to the football club.”

For each beer purchased $1 will go towards the Dalby Diehards club which will help pay staff said Ms Hawkey.

“The money generated from this initiative is just a little bit more to help keep rugby league strong in the region,” she said.
