A Dalby boxer will look to make his Olympic dream a reality after being selected for the Queensland Futures Team and the You for 32 Olympic Selection Team.

Dalby PCYC Boxing Club’s Judd Alderton was picked for the exclusive squads after a series of impressive performances at local, state and national level as well as rigorous fitness testing.

“For the Queensland Futures Team the selection comes down to how he performs in fights and winning Queensland State Titles, Australian Titles and the hard work he puts in definitely helped,” coach Andrew Alderton said.

“For the You for 32 Olympic Team there were trials with heaps of people throughout the state, they did a few trial days where they had to do fitness tests, like highest vertical leap or fastest sprint to select the best athletes in Queensland.

“That went on every three months to narrow it down and it wasn't just who was the best for boxing, they were also looking for rowers and runners and all sorts of sports that will be at the Olympics.

“You then had to nominate the sport you wanted to be in, they had also had selectors there that knew Judd and what he was capable of so they moved in into the team.”

Mr Alderton said as part the team Judd would undertake regular training in Brisbane leading up the Olympics.

“Every now and then they have training days at the QIS in Brisbane and get trained in the way of nutrition, strength training and sometimes they do a bit of sparring,” he said.

“They also do seminars and trials to make sure their skills and fitness are staying up there with the best athletes in Queensland.

“As time goes on they will do more trials and training to see whether these guys are sticking up to their end of the bargain, training and getting better.”

Mr Alderton said he was proud of Judd as both his coach and his father.

“It feels pretty good, I’m proud of him all the time, he steps out, he achieves, he pushes the limits and there's not much more I can ask of him,” he said.

“Even if he falls down he's learning from it I’m proud of him in everything he does.

“Judd is pushing it and is trying to do something he dreams of so how can you not be proud of him.

“I’m proud of everyone who boxes for me and all my kids.”

Mr Alderton said he would also look at getting Joshua ‘JJ’ Hassan into the squads.

“We are trying to push JJ to go further, there will be another trial run in the second half of the year and we will get him into that and see if we can get him into the team as well.”
