Council seek feedback on Tara Mural encouraging people to “check on their mates”

Tara residents are being asked to give their feedback on a new mural depicting two birds deep in conversation to be painted on the side of Tara Soldiers Memorial Hall.

Tara residents are being asked to have their say on a mural which will adorn the external wall of Tara Soldiers Memorial Hall.

Designed by Chinchilla artist Regina Hyland the draft design features a Cockatoo and Galah “catching up for a chat” among the gum leaves and is titled “how ya goin?”

Ms Hyland said she hoped the artwork would act as a conversation starter and a lighthearted and gentle reminder to check in on your mates.

The design is based off Tara Photographer and TSSC Librarian, Linda Steinohrt’s photography of locally captured Australian birdlife.

The mural came about after community feedback through Council’s Placemaking & Recreation Strategy showed strong community support to have more public art, in Tara.

Public Art projects have previously taken place in Dalby, Chinchilla, and Miles for the improvement of public spaces.

The mural will be located close to an intersection of the main street in town, and its large scale is expected to draw eyes from both visitors and locals alike.

During the design phase Tara residents were asked what they appreciated most about Tara to help inform the design choices.

Common responses included “A kind, inviting and friendly community, lagoons and sunsets, community members who give back and flocks of galahs, sunsets and the clear night skies”.

Tara locals also acknowledged that the community had faced significant challenges and one of the things that made Tara a great place to live is how people “band together” and “support each other” during times of disaster to “come out better on the other side”.

This idea is celebrated in Ms Hyland’s design.
