A Western Downs business will receive a splash of colour after employing award-winning mural artists to paint two of their sheds.

Kerry and Malcolm Nicholson won last year’s Inder Prize People’s Choice Award at Mural Fest with their mural The Spirit of Adventure, the seventh major mural win for the brothers.

Condamine Seeds and Tyre contacted the artists, who have now got underway creating a barn scene on their two large sheds which is expected to take close to three weeks to complete.

Condamine Seeds marketing specialist Eric Liljegren said the mural would provide a pop of colour for their business while staying on theme for the area.

“We contacted Kerry and Malcolm Nicholson to do a theme on two of our sheds, they are doing a local barn theme to highlight what we do and what the area is known for,” he said.

“They just started on Tuesday and it should take about two to three weeks to complete.

“They are big sheds one is our tyre and service shed and the other is where we store our chemicals and manure.”

Mr Liljegren said the murals could have positive tourism implications for Condamine.

“It adds something of local representation and artistic value and it is another thing for the many visitors who come through the region especially the caravanners,” he said.

“There will be a harvest and cattle theme and a couple of images with fixing implements to show what we do at the shop.

“We wanted to pull from cattle and saleyards as well as the cropping industry.”

Kerry said significant work went into preparing murals.

“First off you speak to the customer and find out what they want and develop a layout of what they want, then you present it back to them and come to a conclusion on the final design,” he said.

“The next step is to prepare the surface. It is one of the most important parts of any painting making, sure the surface is correct, and it depends on the surface how you prepare it.

“We then project the image onto the surface and you go ahead and start painting. It is like painting by numbers.

“It’s not an easy job, it’s dirty, you get covered in paint, we work long hours, we were up to 11pm the other night working.”

Kerry said despite the hard work he and his brother got satisfaction out of their art.

“In this piece there is a dude who is changing a big tyre on it and because this area is very rural we put a big wheat paddock and on the other end of the painting, we have a number of men mustering cattle all set against a stormy background,” he said.

“We’ve been doing this for 40 years, we love the freedom of being able to do our own thing within the parameters of what the customer wants, we are also our own bosses.

“We’ve been all over Australia doing this and it's nice when people take photos and put them up on Facebook and you see work you did two years later.

“It's also good to get to speak to the locals and meet all the different characters.”
