The revitalised $8.4m dollar Chinchilla Cultural Precinct has officially been completed and residents are invited to come celebrate the opening this Christmas period.

Mayor Paul McVeigh said the opening event which will be held next month on December 9, was a great opportunity to showcase the precinct which will serve as a thriving cultural hub for community gatherings, events, exhibitions and entertainment.

“The time has nearly come to drop the veil on this fantastic facility and we’re excited to showcase the space to the community, which has been waiting patiently for construction to be completed,” he said.

The construction works for the project began in December last year with the Western Downs Regional Council stating there would be a brand new outdoor amphitheatre, seating terraces, street arbours and ‘bush houses’ as well as a revamp to the cinema.

“Lapunyah Art Gallery will showcase its fabulous new facility with The Regeneration Exhibition featuring the works of 19 local artists across several artistic forms,” Mr McVeigh said.

“Chinchilla Cinema will showcase two special screenings with a discounted ticket price of $2 – screening the 80s classic ‘Back to the Future’ at 4pm and ‘Max Max: Fury Road’ at 7pm, which was directed by Chinchilla-born filmmaker George Miller.”

The official ribbon cutting to mark the opening of the cultural precinct will be at 2pm at Fuller Place which is located at 82 Heeney St Chinchilla.

“It’s a day of festive celebration for Chinchilla, and I encourage everyone to come along to explore the new precinct before heading over to the Botanic Parkland for the community’s premier Christmas celebration,” Mr McVeigh said.
