NSW Police crack down on knife crime

A man who was arrested after he allegedly threatened staff with an axe and robbed a store has been released on bail.

Joshua Brent Holland fronted Dalby Magistrates Court on Monday after police alleged he threatened Foodworks staff members in Dirranbandi with an axe and stole $1500 on November 20.

Defence lawyer Julia Molloy said her client would be contesting the facts as the man initially described by witnesses was believed to be someone else and not Mr Holland.

Ms Molloy also submitted the 39-year-old would have to spend a “lengthy” amount of time in custody before the matter was next mentioned.

“There’s no robberies in his history,” she said.

“The knock on effect it would have on his family would be somewhat catastrophic.”

Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins said the father of six had a history that included failure to appear offences and that the prosecution's case was “relatively strong”.

In granting Mr Holland bail magistrate Kerrie O’Callaghan set a condition that he not have contact with the other person allegedly involved in the offences.

He was granted bail and was expected to appear in St George Magistrates Court on December 17.
