A Central Queensland teenager was caught with MDMA and cannabis in his saliva while driving through Emerald at night.

Ty Vincent Rolfe, 18, pleaded guilty at Emerald Magistrates Court on August 16 to driving while a relevant drug was present in his saliva, while holding a provisional license.

Rolfe, a trade assistant, was intercepted by police while driving along Clermont street, Emerald, about 3.30pm on June 19, the court heard.

He passed the roadside breath test but failed the drug test, with further tests revealing the presence of MDMA and cannabis.

Rolfe said he “took them both” at a party the night before, which was a “stupid idea”.

He told the court he waited until 3pm to drive to ensure the alcohol was out of his system and assumed the drugs would be too.

Magistrate Robert Walker recognised that Rolfe acknowledged it was a foolish decision and said he hoped he would learn from the incident.

Rolfe was fined $400 and disqualified from driving for three months. The conviction was not recorded due to his young age and lack of relevant history.
