'SANDOLOGIST' may not be a career path taken by many.

But for Steve Machell sand sculpting is not a job. It is a passion.

The internationally renowned sand sculptor will be lending his expertise to the sculpting competition, Castles in the Sand, at Yamba Main Beach this Sunday.

"Immediately I felt I had found my calling," Steve said, remembering the first time he tried sand sculpting.

"At the time I was looking for direction in my life.

"I'd just made a new year's resolution to find a career or way of life that involved making people happy, was fun and wouldn't tie me to one place forever," he said.

"I think I found it, I was hooked.

"I stuck at it and through trial and error evolved my own unique style."

Since then, Steve has become world famous for his elaborate creations made from nothing more than sand, water, and a creative mind.

Castles in the Sand is hosted by Yamba Rotary in conjunction with Clarence Valley Council and Yamba Surf Club.

It will begin with a sand sculpting demonstration from Steve, followed by the sculpting competition.

There will be two categories, seven years and under and seven years and over, with a maximum of four in a team.

The Cancer Council of NSW will be there with a marquee to help provide sunscreen and shade.

A barbecue will be available to purchase food and cold drinks.

The Rotary Club of Yamba hopes that the day will help thank the local community and all of the tourists who have visited the area.

Registration for the competition and Steve's sand sculpture demonstration will start at 8.30am.

The competition starts at 11am and goes for one hour, with judging and presentation of prizes to start immediately after.
