Man suffers significant burns after caravan explodes in Emu Park

Residents in a seaside Central Queensland town have described the frightening impact of a caravan explosion as the man who was inside and suffered critical burns fights for life in a Brisbane hospital. LATEST.

Residents of a coastal town have described the moment they felt their homes shake and windows rattle after a caravan explosion.

It comes after Queensland Health confirmed a man in his 50s who sustained significant burns in the incident at Emu Park, east of Rockhampton has since been transferred to Brisbane for treatment.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at the private property on Pears St at 8.53pm Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Police Service said no other property was damaged during the incident and no other people were injured.

A spokesman for Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said crews extinguished the blaze by 9.50pm and also assisted paramedics to remove the man from the caravan.

The QFES spokesman said firefighters removed a gas cylinder from the caravan with a gas examiner requested to assess it.

He said no further action was required with the gas cylinder.

The man, aged in his 50s, was taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a critical condition.

He was later transferred to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital on Monday, where he remained in a critical condition on Tuesday.

Madeleine Hazlett, who lives near Pears St wrote on Facebook she felt her house “shake” following the explosion.

“Was this around 9.30/10pm near the school? We found our house shake and window rattle. Wondering if this explosion could explain it,” she said.

Theresa Green replied saying she also felt and heard the explosion.
