Two hundreds residents turned out for the 2023 Sport and Active Recreation Awards at Emerald Town Hall on Saturday, February 25.

The night, which kicked off at 5pm and partied on until 12am, was about recognising not just the winners but the nominees who worked tirelessly throughout the sporting season to put together sporting and community events.

Guests were treated to a presentation from special guest speaker, retired Broncos player Sam Thaiday, a three course meal prepared by Emerald State High School Tuckshop team that were award winners themselves, and entertainment from the the Emerald Town Jazz Band.

Ahead of the event, Central Highlands Regional Council mayor Kerry Hayes said Thaiday’s appeal extended past the footy field and it was his general vibe and charisma that drew people to him.

“What I really appreciate about Sam, is his involvement in the community,” Mr Hayes said.

“As great as Sam was on the field, it’s his charisma that really shines.

“Having that energy at our event is something all in attendance can look forward to.”
