The CEO of a regional Queensland council has penned a letter to one of the big four banks as an eleventh hour plea for the company to rethink its closure of Biggenden’s last bank.

A rural council is writing to one of the big four banks calling for it to reconsider the looming closure of Biggenden’s last bank.
North Burnett Regional Council’s CEO has written to National Australia Bank with the council’s concerns following its announcement earlier this month that it would close its Biggenden branch in July.
Division 6 councillor Robbie Radel said the decision was unfair for the country town and its businesses.
“The imminent closure of the NAB branch bank on Biggenden will leave a huge hole in community,” he said.
“The GDP coming out of this region is as high as anywhere, yet producers and businesses are expected to accept further reductions in support from big business and banks who happily accept our money into their establishments.
“They expect us to take it out of town, closing another business front down, sacrificing local jobs and continuing in the centralisation into the larger towns and cities.”
Mayor Les Hotz said the council was not consulted in the decision and only received notice in line with the community.
Council chief executive officer Margot Stork has sent the letter to the bank and not yet received a response.
“Banking services are vital in regional townships and the closure will adversely affect many individuals, organisations and small businesses,” Mrs Stork said.
“These groups make up the backbone of the Biggenden community with the services they provide and we cannot afford to lose any one of them, because of the bank’s decision to focus solely on their bottom line.”
