BYRON Shire Real Estate has achieved a record price for a residential property at Brunswick Heads with the sale of an historic home in Mullumbimbi St for almost $1.4 million.

The April 2 sale of the distinctive house for $1,390,000 is a record for a residential property on the west side of Tweed St. (old Pacific Highway).

Listing agents Todd Buckland and Tod Martin held eight open houses, which resulted in more than 300 people inspecting the home.

Nearly 100 people attended the auction and there were five registered bidders.

Standing tall on the only hill in Brunswick Heads, it was once the property of renowned identity Lester Phillips.

The unusual tower with rooftop viewing platform was designed for Mr Phillips to watch his 50-foot fishing trawlers, The Madonna and The Eastern Star, cross the Brunswick River bar.

Today the platform offers some of the most expansive views in town - from mountain peaks in the west- through to the river and Norfolk pines in the north and east.

A substantial 2001 renovation and extension has added a modern kitchen with stainless appliances and walk-in pantry; two new bathrooms and laundry; and a separate bedroom, bathroom, living area and kitchenette that can be closed off from the rest of the house as self-contained accommodation.

Todd Buckland said the new owners had holidayed in Brunswick Heads for years.

"They love the village and have long admired the house," he said.
