Years of determination and training have paid off for superstar Bundaberg hockey player Rebecca Greiner, 22, who will play for the Hockeyroos in 2022.

The Bundaberg born hockey forward said she was thrilled when she heard the news of her selection.

She shared the news with family and friends, while watching the Winter Olympics.

“I was actually isolating in Perth when I found out, so I pretty much just called my family and spoke to them,” Ms Greiner said.

From a fractured thumb putting her debut on hold in Japan in 2018, to missing out on her selection in the 2020 Hockeyroos Squad Ms Greiner has battled through her setbacks.

She was also still coming out of a six month hamstring rehabilitation.

But, she said she was focused on getting back into running and playing hockey for fun.

“To be honest I did have to do a lot of reflecting after I missed out on selection,” she said.

“While I was going through my rehab, I really tried to think about why I would go back, and why I would be wanting to be in the team.

“I just love playing hockey and I love playing high level hockey, but I guess there’s something special about playing for your country.”

Ms Greiner said while she played for the Bundaberg All Blacks Hockey Club her coach at the time Craig Martin really “paved the way” for her hockey career.

“Huge thanks to Marto and All Blacks and also my family. Obviously I couldn’t have done any of it without any of those people,” she said.

Sport wise, she said her focus for the next few months was the Hockey Women’s World Cup in June and the Commonwealth Games in July.

On a personal level, she said she simply wanted to enjoy the sport she loves and relish the opportunity to represent her country.

“If the last two years have taught me anything it’s that there are so many good hockey players that can be in this team. I know there’s so many girls in the development squad and so many girls who have been in and out of the team before,” Ms Greiner said.

“It really is a great opportunity to get out every day and train and play a sport that you enjoy.

“For me, I just want to keep that perspective and enjoy the year.”
