A supervisor at a Woolworth’s supermarket in the Wide Bay region has escaped serious prison-time after a violent car park assault left a female coworker with ongoing mental health issues and anxiety.
At the time of the assault in late 2022, the 32-year-old night-fill supervisor was reportedly in a casual relationship with the coworker who was listed as the complainant in the Bundaberg District Court on Tuesday.
On October 15, of 2022, the pair were leaving the shopping centre after a late night shift.
When they arrived at the woman’s car, the court heard the manager pinned her against the driver’s side door and aggressively kissed her.
“You forced yourself upon her” Judge Nathan Jarro said
“She felt extremely scared for what you were doing to her.”
The offence left the woman with injuries to her neck, and she made a complaint the following day.
Judge Jarro told the court a victim impact statement revealed the serious mental health issues the young woman continued to endure, specifically her difficulties in interacting with men.
In handing down his sentence, Judge Jarro said the 32-year-old man was in a position of authority.
“You were her supervisor at work,” he said.
“Women are not to be treated as objects simply for your own gratification or urges.”
An additional three charges, including two counts of sexual assault and one count of rape were submitted to the court but dismissed ahead of the trial.
The 32-year-old man pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful assault and was sentenced to a six month probation order.
Judge Jarro said the former Woolworth’s supervisor would be required to attend mandatory counselling sessions and workshops on consent and appropriate behaviours towards women as a part of the order.
No conviction was recorded.
