A 23-year-old Bundaberg man has found himself back in court after being found with a small amount of cocaine 15 months after receiving a suspended sentence for glassing a person at a pub.

Samuel Jacob Maddern pleaded guilty in Bundaberg District Court in February 2021, to unlawful wounding with a circumstance of aggravation.

Crown prosecutor Carla Ahern told the court Maddern smashed a glass into another man’s face during a disagreement at a pub, leaving the victim battered, cut, bruised and with his nose broken in two places.

Maddern was sentenced to 18 months’ jail, to serve six months with an operational period of three years and 100 hours’ community service for the glassing offence.

Defence barrister Nick Larter said his client suffered from Asperger’s syndrome, but had adhered to his community service and was also fully employed since his release from prison.

It was heard the amount of cocaine Maddern was found with was small and was for personal use.

However, Judge Michael Burnett said it was concerning that since alcohol had been a relevant feature in Maddern’s original offending, the committing of a drug offence was of concern.

“The likelihood of interference with your thinking processes is ultimately a concerning feature,” he said.

Judge Burnett termed it an issue which needed to be addressed.

Maddern had the operational period of his sentence extended by three months, meaning his suspended sentence will now run until May 9, 2024.
