Bundaberg police issue warning after unlawful entries in Kalkie

Bundaberg police have warned residents of one suburb in particular to lock up as thieves strike. It comes as police data reveals the most common crimes across the region in the past three months.

Bundaberg police have warned car owners to lock up after a spate of unlawful entries in the suburb of Kalkie.

Police officer Brittany Duncan said that in once incident on the morning of June 11, multiple cars on Morgan Way, Georgia Tce and Alison Dr were targeted by thieves.

“This is also a timely reminder to residents that park vehicles external to the residence to ensure cars are locked and keys are removed and secured inside the residence,” a police statement said.

The warning came as a total of 1662 offences were recorded in the Bundaberg council area between March 27 and June 26, 2022.

Of those offences, the most common was theft, with 304 offences recorded.

Traffic offences came in second with 282 recorded offences and the third largest category was drug crimes, with 249 recorded offences.

Property damage, good order offences, assault and “other” offences made up most of the moderate categories across the city.

The crimes least recorded were unlawful entry, fraud and weapons offences.

Midnight proved to be the witching hour in Bundaberg, with the vast majority of crimes happening around this time.

Neighbourhood Watch recommends the following tips to stay safe:

  • Lock your doors and windows even if you are home.
  • Always lock your car if left unattended.
  • Don’t keep any valuables in the car (or lock in boot out of sight if necessary).
  • Make sure there are no items lying around the yard that can be used to gain entry to your home.
  • Don’t leave wheelie bins in an area that gives easy access to a window.
  • Some break-ins are purely to get access to car keys. Don’t leave them on a bench or table for someone to steal your vehicle.
  • Report any suspicious people or activity to the police.
  • If you have security cameras installed and there has been an incident in your street check your cameras as there may be footage that could help police
