Bundaberg woman charged with drug trafficking, money laundering

Police say they’re committed to cleaning up the “poison” of meth in Queensland communities after a woman was charged with drug trafficking and allegedly found with more than $200,000 in ‘unexplained wealth’. VIDEO

A 14-month investigation has resulted in Queensland police charging a woman with drug trafficking and money laundering offences in Kirwan, near Townsville, on Wednesday.

The East Bundaberg woman, who now lives in Townsville, was initially charged with supplying dangerous drugs (methylamphetamine), possessing dangerous drugs (cannabis), possessing dangerous drugs (methylamphetamine – exceeding schedule 3), possessing anything used in the commission of crime, possess utensil, possess tainted property and unlawful possession of restricted drugs last year.

According to police, the tactical crime squad began a protracted investigation involving a forensic accountant and other specialist resources, which allegedly identified $260,000 of unexplained wealth over an approximate two-year period while the woman was unemployed.

The 41-year-old woman was arrested in Kirwan and charged with drug trafficking and money laundering.

Her bail was refused and she is due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court today.

Speaking generally, MIDTCS officer in charge Sergeant Joel Bryant said police would continue investigating the supply of drugs in the community.

“We will maintain our pursuit of those who profit from peddling this poison within our community,” he said.

“The associated... physical and mental health impact of methylamphetamine on individuals, their families and our community is devastating.”

Sergeant Bryant encouraged anyone in our community who was suffering from drug dependence to seek support from Queensland Health’s Alcohol and Drug Information Service.
