Avoca’s Westside Plaza is getting a major facelift in an effort to breathe new life into the long-struggling mall.
The owners of the shopping centre have been given the green light by Bundaberg Regional Council to overhaul the centre to include a new gym and child care centre.
The child care centre will be able to cater to at least 26 staff and 100 children.
The existing supermarket will be renovated to make way for the gym, intended to run 24 hours a day.
A mezzanine level will be added above the gym and part of the outdoor loading area will be repurposed into a training area.
The remainder of the supermarket will be repurposed for the child care centre, with 15 parking spaces to be removed and replaced with an outdoor play area.
There will still be 185 parking spots left at the centre once the renovations are complete.

Shops along the eastern side of the centre and the central mall will remain.
Questions have swirled around the future of the Avoca shopping centre which struggled to attract a new tenant to replace Coles when the major retailer packed up and moved to Takalvan St.
In July 2017, there was rumoured to be a business preparing to take over the main shop, but two years later it was still empty.
The council approved the development subject to 10 conditions around roads, access, waste and environmental management.
