Erosion at Moore Park Beach has reached a critical point, prompting Bundaberg Regional Council to demolish the old surf club building as an emergency safety measure.
Authorities had already closed sections of the area following significant erosion which exposed the foundations of the Moore Park Surf Lifesaving Club.
The shoreline’s continued retreat placed the club and nearby infrastructure at risk, leading to immediate intervention.
A structural engineering assessment was undertaken to determine the necessary emergency measures, and now, with a king tide forecast for February 28, the decision has been made to remove the building before further uncontrolled damage occurs.
Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesman Jason Bartels said Council had reinforced the bank through sandbagging and concreting to slow the impact, but needed to act quickly.
“This king tide poses a new threat to the building, and we must prioritise public safety by safely removing the structure before any more uncontrolled damage can occur,” Councillor Bartels said.
Mr Bartels said the emergency works would protect the foreshore and Council’s recent investments in the Moore Park Beach area.
“Our Moore Park Beach Masterplan is already underway with the delivery of a new community hub,” he said.
“Through the masterplan works, we’ve also worked alongside Surf Lifesaving Queensland to provide significant support to the development of the new Moore Park Beach Surf Lifesaving clubhouse and facilities.”
Council has continued to liaise with stakeholders, including landowners and relevant State Government departments, to manage the ongoing response.
Residents and visitors are urged to avoid the exclusion zone, which extends 100 metres along Bob Nielsen Park and in front of Surf Club Drive.
Alternative beach access points remain open.
