A homeless man who was caught masturbating in a public park in front of children has faced a Bundaberg court.
Locklan Raymond Lancaster, 26, pleaded guilty to one charge of committing a lewd act in a public setting in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday.
Lancaster appeared via video link from the Maryborough Correctional Centre.
The court was told Lancaster engaged in the indecent act in Alexandra Park on January 13, just 10m away from the public with witnesses including children present.
Magistrate Nigel Reeves said it was a grave offence, particularly its proximity to children and the general public.
Despite the severity of the offence being of a ‘sexual nature’, the magistrate also took into account Lancaster’s mental health condition, which includes a diagnosis of schizophrenia or a related disorder, ADHD and autism.
Lancaster received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended with immediate release after serving 117 days.
The suspended period carries an operational duration of two years, during which Lancaster must refrain from any criminal activity that warrants imprisonment.
Lancaster assured the court he was committed to staying out of trouble, saying he was going to move in with his grandparents for stability and “keep my nose clean”.
