James ‘Jimmy’ Spokes had a way of leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, he faced challenges that would have discouraged many – but not James.

He was always smiling, always making others laugh, and always living life to the fullest of his ability.

James’ passing at just 19 was an unexpected shock.

Despite being in good health, he died from aspiration pneumonia on Saturday, March 15 with his brother William, William’s wife Dana, and some of his carers by his side.
A funeral was held on Wednesday for 20-year-old James Spokes, where family, friends, and support workers shared memories filled with laughter and warmth.
His brother, William, said James “really squeezed the juice out of life” and recalled a story of James running away, getting bogged in his wheelchair, and being arrested along Rosedale Road.
His carer and best friend, Trent, spoke of plans they had to attend concerts later this year.
The memorial was lighthearted and filled with humour, reflecting James’ vibrant personality.

His loss has left a profound impact on those who knew him. “It has taken a very heavy toll on everyone,” William said.

“James, he touched so many people so easily, and you could never forget him.”

William remembered his little brother as the “happiest of blokes”.

“He just wanted to live life and enjoy it,” William said.

“He knew he wasn’t going to live as long as normal.”

James had a wicked sense of humour and a talent for making people laugh.

He was known for “taking the p*** out of anyone and everyone,” William said.

James had an incredible knowledge of war, history, and music – his expertise surpassing that of most his age. He loved building Lego and listening to music, with a particular passion for bands like Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Metallica, and Tom Petty.
His love for music spanned across generations, and he never missed an opportunity to enjoy a good concert or festival with his carers.

A devoted Broncos fan, James cherished the times he got to watch them play.

James’ vibrant spirit will always be remembered by those who knew him.

James began his schooling at Oakwood Primary before moving to North Primary and later North High.

While school was not his favourite thing, he made memories along the way before eventually leaving early. For the past five years, James was cared for full-time by Total Care Bundaberg.

His family is deeply grateful to James Bulbert and his team, who did so much for him. Through Total Care, he met his best mate Trent – a friendship so strong that they became like family.

One of James’ biggest dreams was to travel to Canberra to visit the Australian War Memorial, a place that held deep meaning for him.

Though he never got to make that final trip, he had been there before with his family, creating treasured memories.

For William, the memories of his little brother will always remain close.
“We did a lot together, every moment I’ll remember forever,” he said.
“He was the best little brother anyone could have asked for.
“He was my ring bearer on my wedding day – one day both him and I held very close to our hearts.”

James’ spirit, his laughter, and his love for life will continue to be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

James’ father Matt Spokes said James was a courageous soldier who was his hero.

“No more pain, you’re now travelling the Pink Floyd rainbow, I loved you so much James.”

His family, friends, and carers will carry his memory forward, cherishing the moments they shared with a young man who made the most of every day he had.
