Sectional upgrades to the Bundaberg regions' barely untouched coastal foreshore has been backed by members of the local community.
According to survey results released by Burnett MP Stephen Bennett, access to safe swimming areas, better barbecue areas and more walking tracks along the Innes Park and Coral Cove foreshore were a high priority for the community.
Mr Bennett was inspired to call for community feedback after the removal of the boat ramp at Barolin Esplanade in January.
He said more than 60 people shared their thoughts in the survey.
“It’s clear that access to the beach and safe swimming areas is most important and needs to be addressed sooner rather than later,” Mr Bennett said in a statement
“Any developments need to be conducted with the utmost care and consideration for the community and environment.
“That’s why I wanted to start the ball rolling on this project early, to encourage the local council and State Government to work collaboratively.”
Not everyone who completed the survey supported the decision, with some community members pointing out the natural beauty of the area.
“As a resident the main concern for myself along with many are what environmental impact studies have been undertaken with regards to the removal of the existing boat ramp?,” one community member asked.
While others commented “nothing” was needed on the foreshore, or to “leave some space for wildlife” during planning.
Some comments supporting upgrades mentioned bike lanes to and from Innes Park and Coral Cove, as well as more 50 speed zone signs, were required along the foreshore.
Mr Bennett attached the survey results in correspondence to Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, Steven Miles and Bundaberg Regional Council CEO, Steve Johnston.
“Thorough and thoughtful community consultation is absolutely crucial,” he said.
“I’ve supplied the results of this survey to the BRC and Department of State Development and Infrastructure to encourage further research and discussions.
“I will continue to seek transparency and clarity on all local projects and look forward to working together with the community.”
The NewsMail has reached out to Minister Steven Miles for comment.
