In July, Bundaberg NewsMail held a vote to determine Bundaberg’s best colourist, and the community has spoken.

With 12 per cent of NewsMail readers casting their votes in her favour, Helen Rimmington of Signature Hair emerged victorious.

“I’m very humbled to have won this. Hairdressing is my passion, so to me it’s not a job. Lived in the Bundy area for 59 years and I’ve had my own business for over 15 years and have loved every minute of it.”

Ms Rimmington’s career began in a different creative field — dressmaking.

However, her transition to hairdressing proved to be a fulfilling choice.

She even shared her expertise by working as a teacher in the hairdressing department at Bundaberg TAFE.

Fifteen years ago, Ms Rimmington opened her own salon, a milestone that allowed her to apprentice her daughter, working alongside her for a decade.

Today, her sister is her senior stylist, making the salon a true family affair.

Ms Rimmington described the salon’s atmosphere as social and welcoming, a place where clients come to relax, laugh, and leave with a smile.

Her passion for colouring and style cutting drives her to continually seek innovative hair colour techniques.

“As a colourist, I’m always on the search for new and innovative hair colour,” Ms Rimmington said.

“I have, with the companies I deal with, been fortunate to travel overseas for training and conferences, which I feel has been greatly beneficial to being a salon owner.

“I have met some amazing, talented, like-minded people, those who have become great friends.

“The nomination to this was a surprise.

“I didn’t really know anything about it until I saw the announcement on Facebook … saying I was in a leading position.

“Thank you to the public for voting for me.

“I’m very humbled to have won.

“Winning was a great birthday present.”

Helen recalls styling her mother’s and grandmother’s hair as a little girl and ensuring her Barbie dolls always had fabulous hairdos.

Second place was a tie between Olivia Powell at Luna Layne and Aria Hair Artistry’s Kirstie Juster.

Third place was also a tie between Kiralee Honour from The Place Hairdressing and Miranda at The Hair Lounge Gin Gin.
