One of Australia’s biggest strawberry farms, SSS (Triple-S) Strawberries in Oakwood, north of Bundaberg is under investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

The business is run by second generation farming family, Victor, Tam, Toan, Gina, Trini and Rena Dang.

The family owns 56.6ha (140 acres) of farmland under cultivation, which grows more than 2.6 million strawberry plants and includes a strawberry shop.

A Fair Work spokesperson said late on Fridaythe investigation was targeting claims of non-compliance and was ongoing.

“The Fair Work Ombudsman is conducting an investigation in relation to SSS Strawberries,” the spokesperson said.

“This is part of our Agriculture Strategy which involves targeting employers in 15 regions where there are indications of high risks of non-compliance across a two-year period.

“As this matter is ongoing, it is not appropriate to comment further at this time.”

In 2019, Fair Work identified the Wide Bay region as being at the highest risk for non-compliance of workplace laws in the horticultural industry.

SSS Strawberries was contacted for comment, but was not able to be reached before time of publication.

In 2019, the family bought the Bundaberg CBD’s renowned ‘whale building’ on Bourbong Street from property developer and previous owner, John Santalucia.

Construction was supposed to start in 2020, but works stalled on the site.

Stage one construction was earmarked to include a tower for student accommodation and a ground floor featuring cafes for public use.

Any workers with concerns about their pay or entitlements are encouraged to contact the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94 (a translation service is available on 13 14 50), or to visit www.fairwork.gov.au.
