The beloved restaurant in Bundaberg, Sabrosa Steakhouse, has shocked the community by announcing its sudden closure after 14 years of service.
The announcement came as a surprise to many, especially since the business had shown no public signs of closure, having advertised a new lunch menu in December.
The announcement was made on the business’ Facebook page on the evening of January 31, with owners Michael Matteschek and Amy Wedemeyer expressing their heartfelt gratitude to their loyal patrons and dedicated staff.
“It is with very heavy hearts that, due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be dinging our LAST ‘STEAKS UP’ bell and hanging up the chef knives,” the owners wrote in the emotional post.
The final day of trade was set for the following day on February 1, leaving little time for patrons to say their goodbyes.
The closure has been met with an overwhelming response from the community, with more than 440 reactions and 157 comments on the farewell post.
“Well, I just fell off the chair. The best meals in Bundy now gone,” Trev Sandzy said.
“Wishing you all the best, but boy, we sure are going to miss the steaks,” Sharon Rae-Berthelsen commented.
“My favourite meal in Bundy was at Sabrosa’s. Maybe my favourite meal ever,” Araluen Mitchell said.
“Never had a bad meal here. Really sad to hear you’re closing. One of the best Bundy restaurants, in my opinion,” Morghan McIntyre commented.
Over the years, Sabrosa Steakhouse was not just a favourite among locals but also played host to notable figures, including veterinarian and TV personality Dr. Harry Cooper, Australian actor and musician John Waters, acclaimed author and former actress Judy Nunn, Australia’s Got Talent 2010 winners Justice Crew, and X Factor Australia 2012 contestant Bella Ferraro.
The restaurant proudly shared photos of these encounters, showcasing its reputation as a must-visit venue for celebrities passing through Bundaberg.
With a strong 4.3-star rating on Google from 442 reviews, Sabrosa Steakhouse was widely regarded as one of Bundaberg’s best dining spots.
