Queensland’s corruption watchdog has named Bundaberg Regional Council in a planned fuel corruption audit.

Bundaberg Regional Council has been identified as one of a number of councils and government agencies to be included in a planned fuel corruption audit by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

The routine examination will be part of the CCC’s two-year program of audits and will begin this month.

According to the corruption audit plan snapshot, the audit will examine a sample of allegations involving misuse of public resources and how public agencies are reducing the incidences of corruption.

The audit will also use data analytics to detect fuel consumption fraud in local councils, where possible.

As well as BRC, the audit will also investigate the Education Department, Environment and Science Department, Queensland Police Service, Ipswich City Council, Whitsunday Regional Council and SunWater Limited.

Bundaberg Regional Council CEO Steve Johnston told the NewsMailit was important to note the examination was “part of a routine audit process and is not an investigation”.

“Over the next couple of weeks, Council will receive an Audit Engagement document that describes how, what, when and where the CCC will do the audit,” he said.

“This is a routine audit involving other councils as well as government departments and agencies.

“We’re confident that our internal control systems are robust and we welcome external scrutiny.

“We don’t expect any significant issues will be identified, but if they are we’ll deal with any recommendations at the appropriate time.”
