For years it was home to Bundaberg’s fire fighters, but after more than a year on the market the old Bundaberg Fire Station in Woongarra Street has sold and plans for its future have been revealed.

The 62-year-old building was put up for sale by the State Government last year, after the Bundaberg Fire Brigade moved to its new Wylie Street station almost three years ago.

The building was purchased by Bridges Health and Community Care in October and there are plans to revamp the former station as part of the Bundaberg Central revitalisation.

There are plans to transform the building into an arts and wellbeing precinct for the community.

The revamps will allow Bridges to host events, workshops and social enterprises to help those who have been marginalised and faced discrimination built their capacity.

The organisation will also continue to deliver their mental health, NDIS, disability employment services and youth bail support services from the location.

The new space will also boast new social enterprises for the wider Bundaberg community members to be part of.

In February, Burnett MP Stephen Bennett called on the government to gift the old Woongarra St fire station building to council to transform it into a community hub.

A similar process had previously happened in Ipswich, where their old fire station was gifted and turned into a community hub.

Bundaberg’s fireys were based at the Woongarra St from 1958 until they moved to their Wylie St station.

Before that the Bundaberg Fire Station was located on Bourbong St before that building was demolished in 1962.
