McDonalds and health authorities have investigated an anonymous complaint about “metal shavings” being found in a soft serve ice cream bought from a McDonald’s Restaurant in Bundaberg.

A complaint was made to the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service after the shaving were allegedly discovered in an ice cream purchased at Sugarland McDonald’s on Thursday, January 4.

“After investigation by the WBHHS Public Health team of the machinery, food production area and discussions with a specialist technician and staff found there is no evidence to support any allegation that it entered the ice cream from a machine failure or by intentional contamination,” a WBHHS spokesperson said on Monday, January 8.

According to the health service, the metal object, which was believed to be metal staple, was presented to McDonald’s staff by two teenage girls.

A McDonald’s spokesperson commented on the incident, and said an internal investigation was immediately launched but did not comment on the nature of the alleged metal found by customers.

“We believe this is an isolated incident and haven’t received any further complaints,” a spokesperson said.

“McDonald’s takes food and drink safety very seriously. We follow strict processes and procedures to ensure the quality of our food.”

The spokesperson said the company would “continue to work with the restaurant on the necessary actions,” but did not provide any insights into what that action would look like.

The health service said it did not see any evidence of the alleged staple during its investigation.

An anonymous participant in the Facebook group “Bundaberg Forum No Rules” said they were “disgusted” at the way McDonald’s staff handled the alleged incident.

“Absolutely disgusted with McDonald’s Sugarland kids got a soft serve ice cream and it had metal shavings in it,” the person said.

“Manager took it and just replaced it. All I can say is wow.”

The Facebook post has since been deleted, and it is unclear if the anonymous poster is the same person who lodged the anonymous complaint with WBHHS.
