A young Bundaberg woman has enjoyed a financially free start to the year after a spontaneous Christmas gift to herself racked in $150,000.

As part of her seasonal celebrations, the young woman purchased a spate of scratchies for her family to scratch over the Christmas break, deciding to treat herself to one in the process.

Her choice to walk into the Lucky Dollar Newsagency and purchase a $10 Jumbo Crossword scratchie would prove to be her windfall when the family realised she had scratched the top prize.

“It’s kind of crazy!” the winning woman said in a press release.

“I actually bought a few of these tickets as gifts for my family for Christmas and I also bought myself one.”

She said the family had gathered on Christmas Eve to scratch away at their cards, with the woman initially jubilant over the fact she thought she had won a minimum prize.

“At first, I was counting the words and thought I’d won a smaller prize,” she said.

“But then we kept checking the ticket and would find an extra word.”

“Then I was like, ‘no way! That’s the top prize!’”

The winning scratchie ticket was purchased at the Lucky Dollar Newsagency on Bourbong Street.

She said even though her family didn’t quite have the same luck with their tickets, they have been supportive of her fortune.

The young woman told the Lott she already has plans for a chunk of the money while she considers her next move.

“It’s quite a boost going into the new year,” she said.

“I’ll be debt free and the rest of the prize I’ll use for savings until I get a better idea of how best to use it.”

The news of the win comes just days after a fellow Wide Bay local in Hervey Bay won $2.3 million just days before New Years.

The man had purchased a QuickPick ticket at newsXpress Eli Waters as a spur-of-the-moment decision while out shopping, and said the win would go towards renovations in the new year.

“I’m just trying to get my head around it,” the man said when The Lott team called to confirm his prize.

“I discovered it last night just after the draw. Initially, I couldn’t understand why all the numbers were red on The Lott app. Then I realised I had them all.”
