AMP Capital, AP Eagers to create AutoMall at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre

Myer has lost space and dozens of other stores have been moved or closed to make way for an Australian-first retail experience at one of Brisbane’s biggest shopping centres.

A section of Myer has been ceded and up to 30 speciality stores have been relocated or closed down to make way for Australia’s first shopping centre based AutoMall.

Eagers Automotive has secured a long-term lease in AMP Capital’s Indooroopilly Shopping Centre in Brisbane’s western suburbs to create the groundbreaking two-level showroom and service centre.

AutoMall West will offer multiple car brands in a purpose-built one-stop destination not just for car shopping but also for new and used vehicle purchasing, servicing and maintenance.

Work is well under way on the AutoMall on Level 3 and the rooftop of the shopping centre and it is expected to open in December 2021.

Myer ceded a small section of its store and one of its multiple entries to the AutoMall while most of the existing tenants in the precinct found new spaces in the shopping centre including Nike, Kathmandu, Connor, JayJays, Just Jeans, Bras and Things and City Beach.

As part of the relocation and remixing process, a few shops, mostly smaller, stand-alone specialty shops, opted not to renew their leases.

AMP Capital head of Retail and Investments Marco Ettorre said the partnership with Eagers Automotive was another step in the evolution of shopping centres from a fashion and department store focus to becoming more “customer experience” orientation.

“What the customer telling us is that they want to come to the shopping centre of the future for an experience and we’re excited to partner with Eagers Automotive in this first within Australia,” he said.

“After over 100 years the automotive customer experience is changing. The days of shopping for a car in a sunbaked car-yard at an auto-alley is now no longer the only purchasing experience a customer has available to them.

“Buyers want choice, comfort and convenience — an experience that a shopping centre can provide.”

The AutoMall will have 2400sq m showroom on Level with 35 cars on display representing at least eight brands, of which Porsche is the first to be confirmed. Other brands will be announced in the coming weeks.

The showroom by Sydney-based Public Design Group has been created to blend seamlessly with the shops around it and even feature a children’s playground and cafe.

Upstairs there is a 12-bay 850sq m rooftop quick service facility, with a customer drop-off and pick-up within the existing shopping centre car park — allowing them the convenience to get their car serviced within a brand approved workshop while they shop.

Test drives of new vehicles will be conducted from the AutoMall and customers will be able to order and take delivery of new cars from the comfort of VIP delivery bays.

Those in the market for a second-hand car will be able to browse thousands of used cars via Eagers Automotive’s Easy Auto 123 National Used Car Brand. Easyauto123 will also facilitate buying cars directly for people looking to sell their cars outright.

Eagers Automotive chief operating officer Keith Thornton said AutoMall West will complement AutoMall Brisbane — being built next to the expanded Brisbane Airport.

“This is giving people a full-blown experience,” he said.

“We’re evolving from the old way of a one size fits all showroom in every six suburbs. By bringing our car sales operation into the familiarity of a shopping centre environment, we’re simply evolving our offering to provide more choice and convenience.

“So what we’re doing is let customers discover and engage with our brands before they’re actually in the market.

“They might be 12 months away from buying a new car but they’re in the shopping centre looking and getting excited about brand X and understand they can transact with us in a place they are familiar with.”
