Prosecutors say ‘significant amount’ of evidence nearly ready for use in case of 19-year-old Yiel ‘Yoal’ Deng Gatluak’s murder

Prosecutors say they have a “significant amount” of fresh evidence they plan to use in the case for the murder of a 19-year-old man in the Red Centre. Read the latest.

A “significant amount” of evidence – including forensic evidence – will be used by prosecutors against the two men accused of murdering a 19-year-old on New Year’s Eve in the Red Centre.

The matters of 22-year-old Koang Wuordol and 22-year-old Guandong Lual Gatl Guandong were again before the Judge at Alice Springs Local Court on Thursday, July 25.

Both have been accused of the murder of 19-year-old Yiel ‘Yoal’ Deng Gatluak at the start of the year, with neither appearing at the latest hearing.

With Gatluak’s family watching on, the case heard before Judge David Bamber was over in about five minutes – with the matter adjourned until August 22.

Wuordol was extradited from Melbourne back to Alice Springs over his alleged involvement in the death of the 19-year -old.

Prosecutor David Dalrymple said the full brief of evidence should be “done next week”.

“The situation is a really significant amount of material (has been) added to the brief,” he said.

He said the evidence also included “forensic material”.

At a January hearing, the court had heard the accused had allegedly stolen the deceased victim’s shoes.

With the new evidence, Mr Dalrymple pushed for an adjournment to the case, which defence lawyer Greg Betts said was suitable for him.
