THOUSANDS of dollars in cash police believe was intended to be used to buy large quantities of drugs was found hidden in a car intercepted leaving a Lockyer Valley car wash.
Three people were in the vehicle when officers from the Lockyer Valley Crime Car and stations and Toowoomba Road Policing Unit intercepted a white Volkswagen Jeda at the Plainland Car Wash on Saturday.
A tip from the public led police to the vehicle which was searched, allegedly finding a quantity of methylamphetamine (ice) and thousands of dollars of cash on Gehrke Rd at Plainland.
"A search of the vehicle was conducted during which police located a ladies purse that contained a clipseal bag containing a rock of suspected methylamphetamine and a glass pipe used to smoke methylamphetamine," LVCC Sergeant Brad Browning said.
"Most significantly, police further advised that during the search, tens of thousands of dollars' worth of cash was located in a bag in the vehicle.
"Police strongly suspect that this large amount of money was destined to be used to purchase significant quantities of dangerous drugs or weapons with the origin of this money being very suspicious and still subject of ongoing police investigations."
A Harristown woman, 22, was charged with possessing a dangerous drug and possessing a drug utensil, and was released on watch house bail to appear in the Gatton Magistrates Court next month.
The woman was intercepted for a second time a short time later and has since been remanded in custody to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday in relation to other matters.
The driver, a Harristown woman, 23, allegedly returned a positive roadside drug test which was sent to Brisbane for further analysis.
Police are yet to charge either of the women, or a man also found in the car, with any offences in relation to the money found.
"Darling Downs police would again like to reiterate and encourage all members of the public to ring Crime Stoppers or Policelink if they have any information relating to criminal activity they observe or suspect in the area," Sgt Browning said.
