Four children have been charged after allegedly travelling from Geelong to Sydney in a stolen car overnight on Wednesday, hurling items at police pursuing them on a busy motorway – with a door hanging open.

In the car, allegedly stolen from outside a Grovedale gym, was a girl aged just 12, two 14-year-old boys and a 17-year-old girl, who was believed to be the driver.

Police were forced to pull back from their pursuit amid the madness, but a PolAir helicopter continued to track the white Mazda CX3, which had been reported stolen in Victoria.

It ended with the arrests of the four children at Bondi Junction, after they fled on foot but were spotted by plainclothes police officers.

NSW Police said the group drove through the night to Sydney after allegedly stealing the car about 3pm on Wednesday.

Arriving into Campbelltown in the early hours of Thursday morning after a 900km ride, police said the teens then continued into Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

NSW Police on Thursday released snippets of aerial footage from 50 minutes of madness, which began with officers attempting to stop the stolen car on the Hume Highway at Edmonson Park, in Sydney’s southwest, about 10.30am.

When the driver failed to stop, a pursuit began, stretching along the M5 before being called off for safety reasons.

PolAir tracked the vehicle to Milperra, where the chase resumed before being terminated again when items were launched at them.

With the chopper still monitoring its movements, the Mazda continued east through Sydney local streets in Alexandria, Zetland, Centennial Park, Randwick and ultimately Bondi Junction, where it was abandoned in a bus interchange about 11.20am.

A police source said one of the juveniles joked about eluding Victorian police before being apprehended.

Police allege the group threw a headrest, floor mats and other items from the car and filmed themselves at high speed while being pursued.

NSW detectives are now working with Victoria Police to determine how the four youths know each other.

Addressing the media on Thursday afternoon, Detective Inspector Adam Solah described the teenagers’ alleged actions as “extremely dangerous” and “very concerning”.

“It’s very concerning, the behaviour of young people who think (allegedly) stealing a car is effectively a joke is what they’re making of it,’’ he said.

“We don’t treat it as such.”

All the children were refused bail and will appear before a children’s court on Friday.
