He’s known for his talent on the footy field, but a rugby league legend has visited the region for a different reason – to save lives.

Mary MacKillop Catholic College students were treated to a visit from Get Ready Queensland ambassador Johnathan Thurston on Thursday.

The school was randomly selected by the Queensland Government, as part of a competition for the campaign which educates others about the dangers of storms, bushfires, floods and other natural disasters.

And the informative session delivered to year 5 students by the sports star, came at the most crucial time.

Tragedy struck the region on Wednesday, when a 73-year-old man sadly died, when the vehicle he was travelling in, was swept away by floodwater.

The incident which occurred West of Toowoomba, was a timely reminder to prepare for natural disasters – a message the former North Queensland Cowboys captain conveyed to students during his visit.

JT says Get Ready Queensland

“It’s about making sure they go home to question mum and dad, or whoever they’re living with, to make sure they’re prepared for a natural disaster,” Mr Thurston said.

“Living in Queensland, it’s only a matter of time before it happens and I know this community has already lost a life due to flooding, so it’s making sure people are well aware of what they need to do.”

The Get Ready steps include understanding the risk, preparing the household emergency plan and packing a home emergency kit.
