Why the region is in desperate need of Emu Creek dam

One Chronicle letter writer believes there is a “desperate need” for Emu Creek dam. Here’s why.

WE read with interest two news items in today’s 27/10 The Chronicle.

The first was the item is the Acland mine extension that is needed for operations to continue there.

The election campaign is all about jobs, jobs, more jobs are needed, yet we see our Premier ignoring a situation which only needs a simple yes on her part to rectify.

Already a lot of workers have been dismissed, and the rest will follow in the near future without any action. These jobs are essential to our local economy.

The second is a project I have written about several times over the past 10 or so years. The desperate need for the Emu Creek dam.

Just build the dam, so that it can catch and store water if we get a suitable season and good run off rain events are usually years apart.

The time to build the actual dam is in the near future, the pipeline can be built after the dam has water and that water is needed.

It need not be connected immediately. So let’s have some action on these two projects. Now or it may be too late, if the mine closes, and like other towns across our mostly dry land, woe betide if we ever have to transport water to Toowoomba by road or rail as we outgrow our water capabilities.
