Watch now: The human faces of our rental state of emergency

It’s the plan aimed at solving a housing crisis ... but is now blowing up the state.

It was revealed the Miles government will provide bridging loans for rental bonds as part of a $160m package to help battling tenants amid Queensland’s housing crisis.

Bonds will also be able to be transferred between rental properties and the government will crack down on dodgy practices such as rent bidding under the initiative.

The “Renters Relief Package” will help ease the burden on Queensland’s 1.8 million renters, according to Mr Miles

Bonds for rentals in Queensland are typically four weeks and often amount to thousands of dollars. The Department of Housing already provides bond loans and rental grants to struggling renters.

Under the relief package, the government will establish a portable bond scheme allowing tenants to transfer bonds when relocating from one rental property to another.

“While this scheme is being established, a Bridging Bond Loan product will be introduced to assist households to afford the upfront cost of a new bond, pending release of their old bond,” a government spokesperson said.

Mr Miles said the scheme – part of the government’s much-vaunted Homes for Queenslanders initiative to tackle the housing crisis – would help the more than one in three Queenslanders who rented their homes.

“Our plan makes sure Queensland renters get a fair go and have the supports they need to ease the cost of keeping a roof over their head,” he said.

However not all readers are buying the plan.

Some claim it’s another weak attempt to solve the housing riddle.

Others said there are much wider problems that need to be addressed first.

While some suggested greed continues to dictate terms across the board.

WHAT YOU SAID

I blame landlords and agents

Humphrey

We spend billions a year subsidising landlords with negative gearing and capital gains discounts It is way past time that these subsidies are contingent on stricter rental laws for greedy landlords.

Graeme

This will only continue the sale of rental properties by landlords. Maybe Miles and co should begin actually providing the share of public housing they should be, and not just yak yak about it. Old proverb: yak yak plus lack of action does not equal results.

Susan

Should have banned bidding on rent a long time ago.

Rick

Make landlords pay the same bond as a tenant.

It’s not the landlords!

Steve

Instead of being obsessed with controlling investors with their rental properties why doesn't this socialist government start controlling greedy wasteful local councils from increasing rates and fees at every chance to fuel their empires of staff and machinery

John

Giggles & labor are a joke. Yet another raft of laws that alienate mum & dad investors … if there weren’t enough investors abandoning the Qld housing market this will start a tsunami. Never have I seen such an inept government in 60 years of voting … never. I cannot wait to vote these village idiots out.

Oh no not again

I hope these and other Labor principles will soon be extended to the professional sporting industry, no bidding wars for players and same job same pay, fairs fairs after all

Mike

So Agents for property investors (who put a roof over peoples head) are no longer permitted to act in their clients best interests and get them the highest rent achievable.

Garry

Agents work for property owners not the state government. Their job Is to get the best possible result for the property owners. That Labor thinks they can enforce price caps on rentals is frankly hilarious.

Premier Steven Miles.

There are wider issues

Budgie

So no-one realises that all costs are going up! Lets cap everything, starting with fuel, power, groceries and stop picking on one part of the economy because its an apparent vote winner.

paul

It’s called a rental market. Such a clown

Shirley

It is called a silent auction. Tough talk from government. Cant stop it.

Looking for the Truth

This just window dressing to try and gain votes. It does nothing to provide more rental properties or reduce rents. Once again this government proves that it has no idea.

Kerry

Rent will decrease when the number of properties available for rent increases! Simple.
