Kerbside collectors 'helped themselves to my building tools'

YOUR SAY: Regarding the kerbside thieves article. It's a shame that this item didn't come a year ago when I was building a fence and retaining wall around my daughter's place.

I'd been two months into the somewhat lengthy job, with no thought a security as it's a busy area, next to the local school, when I arrived one morning to find all my tools (a good electric concrete mixer, a builder's barrow, multiple shovels and all my hand tools - stacked to dry - over $1000 to replace) gone.

This was during a kerbside collection week and I would say there are some collectors that use the opportunity to have a good look around to come back when they know no one's awake.

They were clearly not out for rubbish collection and well within the front yard. Just no fence yet. Last bit to do naturally.

My advice is hide everything from view AND lock up what can't go inside (everything I had was dripping wet at the end of each day so I couldn't take it inside). Use a strong chain to lock all the items together and to something immovable. Police were alerted but I'll bet the individuals would say - if queried - they are simply picking stuff off the footpath.
