IT APPEARS Toowoomba is still divided over the use of recycled water as the region and the state battles the big dry.

The Chronicle asked the question after the concept was brought up again in a general council meeting last week.

The concept has been introduced and developed as part of the council's potential strategies to combat falling dam levels, changes in the climate and a lack of rain forecast, combined with the rising cost of pumping water every year.

A referendum over a controversial plan to use recycled water in the Garden City's drinking supply was held on July 29, 2006.

The proposal was defeated, with 62 per cent of residents voting against it.

Although 80 per cent of subscribers said in a Chronicle poll it was time to look at recycled water again, sentiment on social media was considerably more divided.

Many like Loren Waites said the region had no choice, and recycled water needed to be brought in.

But a number of other people said the State Government needed to look at other options, namely building more dams.

  • Kendall Shore: If we had the recycled water project we wouldn't be as deep into the s*** as we are, now.
  • Chris Neale: It's time for Qld government to build more dams
  • Darren Ramm: Don't give anyone the option just do it.
  • Annette Andrews: No. Get the house washers etc to use that water instead of our underground water and limit those with bores to water restrictions as well!
  • Jason Metzroth: Build more dams and clean the ones out we have
  • Shaan Covet: I think in Australia we need it, everywhere. And more desalination plants. Plus more earth friendly energy
  • John A.L. Campbell: London's water is recycled eight times before it goes back into the drinking system and has done for years
