Australia's Best Teachers: teaching the teachers

We all remember that one teacher who had the most profound impact on our young lives. According to his boss, Harry Smith is that teacher.

The new teacher has made such an impact at Mango Hill State School, north of Brisbane, that students, parents and teachers can’t stop singing his praises.

“It’s hard to believe that Harry is starting his career as a teacher,” principal Ange Padgett said.

“His classroom environment is built on a culture of learning and feedback. Students want to learn as he has an amazing ability to connect and build positive relations with all students.

“Students and families speak very highly of Harry. As adults we often have that one special teacher we talk about that had a positive impact on us as children. Harry is that one teacher.”

“I feel teachers have the most important job in the world. We educate the next generation,” she said.

“Teaching is about ‘educating the whole child’. Ultimately we want students to grow to be kind people who give something back to the world in which we live.

“Teachers work long hours and show an unwavering commitment to their job. I’m proud to be the principal of teachers where a learning culture is embedded into all that we do.”
