Analysis: Poll to reveal likely fate as Labor comes out spending

Labor hasn’t left a taxpayer dollar on the table in its bid for re-election. But will The Courier-Mail’s YouGov poll boost or bury its hopes?

Labor’s rapid-fire policy bombs are exhausted, and this poll will reveal whether they’ll fight on to win or save the furniture.

To turn the tide of voters rushing to the LNP, the government has spent big on cost-of-living measures.

Incumbency unlocks billions of taxpayer dollars which Labor has used for $1000 energy rebates, 50c public transport fares and a 20 per cent cut to car registration.

These measures will make an immediate difference to Queenslanders and give Labor the best chance of fighting this election.

No senior minister stands up now without using a “50c fare” or “cost-of-living relief” banner as their backdrop.

“We’re still fighting, we’re still in it,” Treasurer Cameron Dick trumpeted at the May 26 unveiling of the 50c fares.

Polling by friendly unions has revealed a boost in support for Steven Miles’s Labor government – but it remains a long way off his predecessor Annastacia Palaszczuk’s 2020 result.

Will Labor believe they’re still in it after The Courier-Mail’s YouGov poll is released?

It will boost or bury the optimism of marginal and long-term Labor MPs desperate for hope just 100 days from the state election.

Well-placed government sources insist voters are waking up to the lack of detail in Opposition Leader David Crisafulli’s policies.

He has yet to detail how cost of living would be eased, victim numbers would be lower and pressure on the health system released under an LNP government.

Expect that small target strategy to continue if this poll – as expected – maintains the LNP’s lead.

This poll won’t be the end of either party, but it will chisel the writing into the wall for many MPs.

At least 18 Labor MPs, including four ministers, face obliteration if the trend continues.
