A Northern Territory Emergency Service station officer from Nhulunbuy has led a 70-strong crew of volunteers to North Queensland to help in flood recovery efforts.
Seasoned NTES officer Lee Webb of Nhulunbuy was chosen to head the group deployed to Townsville as the city grapples with flood recovery efforts.
The scale of the disaster prompted a nationwide call for help, with the Northern Territory crew stepping up in force.
The NT team, comprising of volunteers and staff from Darwin, Palmerston, Nhulunbuy, and Katherine, are undertaking critical flood response efforts, including debris removal, flood boat resupply, and evacuation centre operations.
NTFES Commissioner Andrew Warton praised the local responders.
“Our dedicated volunteers and staff members are more than happy to step up and assist during this critical time,” Mr Warton said.
“Given the scale of the flooding emergency, Queensland SES (State Emergency Service) has requested additional capacity, and our team is well prepared for the challenge.”
He said co-ordinating 70 workers in an interstate disaster zone requires experience, quick decision-making, and a steady hand.
