One Playground gym to open at Merrylands’ Mason and Main development

A bougie gym chain is expanding in western Sydney where it plans to be the anchor tenant at a $63m residential complex that will be home to its largest facility yet.

The upmarket One Playground gym chain is slated to be the anchor tenant in a Merrylands development and will be the brand’s largest fitness centre.

Development group Coronation Property revealed plans for the “super boutique” gym to occupy two storeys of the 450-apartment Mason and Main development where it will be the first of the chain’s gyms in western Sydney.

One Playground chief executive Justin Ashley said the facility would open at the Merrylands Rd site early this year when the brand breaks away from its regular Sydney habitats.

“I feel very connected to western Sydney and recognise these communities are crying out for high-quality brands and experiences,’’ he said.

“Our team is excited to challenge the norm that a premium wellness and fitness brand only belongs in the inner city or beachside suburbs. I cannot wait to bring our concept to Merrylands.’’

The two-storey gym will feature five training studios, a pilates studio, wellness facilities and luxury change rooms with soaring ceilings, “beautiful brickwork” and metal framed arched windows.

“Mason and Main’s architecture is iconic and memorable, and it’s not something you expect to see in Merrylands – which is why we love it,” Mr Ashley said.

“We will never create two gyms that look the same. It must be curated to suit the building, and appeal to the local community.’’

Coronation Property managing director Joseph Nahas said One Playground’s arrival represented the best amenities for Mason and Main residents and western Sydney.

“This calibre of tenant also sets the scene for the level of exceptional businesses soon to be announced,” he said.

Along with the gym, the 9000sq m mixed-use Mason and Main complex will host about 30 retail and dining tenancies, including restaurants Hayat Turkish and Iftar cafe on the “eat street”, a childcare centre and beauty outlets.

There will be pedestrian-only laneways, 147 dedicated retail car spaces and electric vehicle charging stations.

Coronation started its subsidiary company, Nation, at the start of October, which will focus on operating build-to-rent communities across Sydney. It projects it will create 1500 such properties available across three key Sydney locations by 2025, with Mason Main being the largest.

“Nation will put consumers first and give power back to renters by putting them in the driving seat with choice, security, and flexibility in how they live,’’ Mr Nahas said.

“It will provide them access to brand-new homes without needing a mortgage.”
