Nurses strike banned by Industrial Relations Commission, health carers to strike via Zoom

Thousands of nurses and midwives will meet online to discuss working conditions after the Industrial Relations Commission banned them from stopping work to take industrial action.

Sydney faces week of protest

A strike that would see health workers take to the streets on Tuesday has been banned by the Industrial Relations Commission.

The industrial action planned by the NSW Nurses and Midwives Association was expecting to see staff from 80 hospitals stopping work.

The IRC ordered the union “must immediately cease organising and refrain from taking industrial action on 28 June 2022”.

NSWNMA was ordered to remove all references to the action from its website and social media accounts and tell it’s members to follow the new orders.

The union will defy orders and will stop work to meet online at 2pm.

NSWNMA Acting General Secretary, Shaye Candish, said in considering last week’s NSW budget and the Ministry of Health’s wages and conditions offer, the NSWNMA Council had expressed support for members’ pursuit of safe staffing ratios.

“There’s widespread dissatisfaction among our members over the NSW government’s refusal to even consider safe staffing ratios, what’s been outlined in the budget, and serious transparency concerns about the announced workforce enhancements and regional incentives,” said Ms Candish.

“The government is continuing to ignore the pleas of highly-skilled clinical professionals who remain extremely worried about the delivery of safe patient care now and into the future.

The government’s plan to dramatically increase fines for breaching IRC orders is not yet law and Labor has vowed to vote down the legislation.
