A young man has been shot in the buttocks after a gunman opened fire on him in what police have described as a targeted attack.

The shooting, believed to have underworld links, occurred in Penrith on Friday night, with a getaway car set alight in a quiet, residential street just 15 minutes later.

The victim, aged in his 20s, was sitting in the driver’s seat of his ute on Hickeys Lane around 10pm, when it’s understood two men pulled up alongside him, firing several rounds in his direction.

The man suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, and was rushed to hospital after triple-0 received reports of the shooting.

Paramedics and NSW Police quickly arrived at the industrial area where the man had been parked, before they received reports of a car on fire 8km away in Claremont Meadows.

Police believe the alleged gunmen pulled up on Kindlebark Close, before quickly covering the vehicle in accelerant, setting it alight and fleeing into nearby bushland.

A resident who lives on the quiet street said he heard the voices of two men yelling before the car exploded into flames.

“I heard this frantic yelling, and then I started to hear the cracks and booms,” he said.

“I looked outside and the whole thing was on fire. Sirens were blaring quickly after that, and they were looking for the guys in the bushland.

“When we found out there’d been a shooting I just thought ‘not again’ – this has got to stop.”

It’s understood the victim was known to police, and had links to the underworld. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

It’s the second shooting this Sydney week, after a North Kellyville home was sprayed with bullets on Thursday in what was a case of mistaken identity.
