The south coast community has rallied around a “beloved” regional farmer and his family after he was severely injured in a horror quad bike crash on Christmas Day, raising tens of thousands of dollars for his treatment in a matter of days.
Well-known farmer Jesse Evans, the owner of produce business Sussex Greenhouse, sustained “horrific, life-changing” injuries on December 25 after crashing a quad bike on his Shoalhaven property.
Mr Evans’ daughter, Chloe Evans, said his injuries were so bad, the family’s Sussex Inlet-based business had been forced to close its doors for the foreseeable future.
“He’s a well-known and respected farmer in our local community,” Ms Evans said.
“He truly is the backbone of Sussex Greenhouse.”
The business, which supplies local produce such as vegetables and fruit to the Shoalhaven community, shut for Christmas and has remained closed since the incident.
Ms Evans and her partner, Jo, created an online fundraiser on GoFundMe in a bid to fund her father’s rehabilitation, keep the family afloat while their produce business is closed, and keep the farm in working order.
In less than two weeks, more than $33,000 has been raised.
“Jesse is much more than just a farmer,” Ms Evans said.
“He is loved and adored by anyone that has had the pleasure of meeting him.
“The vision for Sussex Greenhouse is to help the south coast grow and support small scale producers, so we’re hoping for the same support during this time.”
Supporters of the south coast business have shared wishes of support for Mr Evans and the family.
“Thinking of you all and sending love and healing energy. Wishing Jesse a speedy recovery,” one said on the online fundraiser.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Jesse,” another said.
Ms Evans said she was not sure when the business would reopen, with the business site currently stating “we endeavour to open as soon as we possibly can”.
She thanked the community for its support after the tens of thousands of dollars was raised in such a short period.
“We are remaining positive for a complete recovery, which will be a long road ahead for all of us,” she said.
